December 16, 2020 Update
We have updated our business relief measures, and you can read more on the business relief measures tab. Here are the highlights:
Plan member reduction in hours: January 1, 2021 we will revert to our standard eligibility rules related to minimum work hours. We are asking plan administrators to make updates using the administrator portal; we are not automatically terminating coverage for anyone who is not working the minimum number of hours.
Covered benefit amounts: January 1, 2021 we will revert to our standard practice. This means Empire Life will align coverage amount of benefits that are earnings-based to reflect plan member earnings.
COVID-19 Surcharges for personal protective equipment (PPE): PPE surcharges are only eligible for coverage under a Health Care Spending Account (HCSA) or Incidental Health Expense (IHE) if one is available. We’ve received questions about PPE claims and would like to clarify that Group contracts cannot be amended to add this coverage.
Lay-off provisions: Customers can continue to amend their contracts to add or update the standard lay-off provision. Our standard provision does not allow for short or long-term disability to be continued during the lay-off. Administrative exceptions can still be requested by the plan sponsor to extend disability coverage during a lay-off.
Policy Amendments: We are removing this section as all standard amendment processes are in place
We have updated the disability benefits section: Effective January 1, 2021 we will no longer waive the waiting period for COVID-19 WI/STD claims. We have removed the section on schools/daycare as this was more relevant in the summer months.
We have updated the plan member FAQ
We have updated the Prescription drug section to talk about vaccines.
