To help combat the national emergency of the opioid crisis, Empire Life's opioid management solution is included with all pay direct drug plans (except Quebec). This solution focuses on prevention and intervention by minimizing opioid exposure to prevent misuse of these powerful drugs for members who are using them for the first time or have not taken them in the past six months. The drug therapy and pain management will be more precisely controlled; plan members will be encouraged to use these drugs with caution, and excess opioids will be limited.

Our dedicated disability claim experts continuously conduct research and participate in industry groups. In this way, our approach to disability management reflects the most up-to-date art and science. We provide an extensive range of disability management services that follow industry best practices—which means employees receive the support they need when they need it.

As part of our robust set of disability tools, pharmacogenomics provides the potential to help disabled plan members get the right medication based on their genetic makeup. This way, their treatment program can be more effective. While this is a relatively new field, we see significant opportunities to improve our plan members’ outcomes.

Disability management teams have used predictive analytics for many years. The volumes of anonymized data that have been compiled help Empire Life deliver more precise, cost-efficient treatment - resulting in a faster return to work. Questionnaires are sent to claimants and their employers to build these data sets. That way, a comprehensive understanding of the member’s work and personal life can be obtained. These questionnaires gather the necessary psychosocial data to assist our claims team in better understanding all aspects of the member’s life situation. These results help ensure we align the right type of assistance based on the claimant’s needs.

Mental health disability claims are a significant challenge. These claims are typically challenging to adjudicate, and getting disabled members the help they need can be difficult. Internet-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (iCBT) can help by providing virtual access to therapists who can help claimants obtain the skills necessary to return to work. While CBT is not new, having this available virtually is. So, if someone needs help and is reluctant to leave home, or perhaps lives in a rural setting, iCBT can help deliver the right support to the member when and where it is needed.

While working in a foreign country can be exciting and rewarding, it may present some challenges when accessing healthcare. This new Telemedicine service provided by AXA's ‘Doctor Please!’ app and offered through Empire Life can offer globally mobile employees 24/7 access to licensed providers from any mobile device in multiple languages. Adding this new Telemedicine service creates additional assurance that members will have access to care when they need it.
